  7.     A record was set in major-league baseball last week -- by
  8. a pitcher who retired from the game in 1986. Tom Seaver, whose
  9. power and precision turned the New York Mets into champions and
  10. who later pitched his only no-hitter for the Cincinnati Reds,
  11. was admitted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year
  12. of eligibility. Seaver's winning percentage of 98.8% of the
  13. hearts and minds of the Baseball Writers Association of America
  14. slid past the previous record of 98.2% collected by diamond king
  15. Ty Cobb in 1936. The writers' group also fingered relief pitcher
  16. Rollie Fingers for his unmatched 341 saves. He is the first
  17. hurler with a lifetime losing record to enter Cooperstown.
